Geelong Dog Owners: Five Best Parks and Beach Spots Revealed

Geelong is an excellent city for dog owners, with a revitalised waterfront that welcomes dogs on leash, off-leash parks across all suburbs, and the Bellarine Peninsula providing beach access at several designated dog-friendly coastal locations. The You Yangs Regional Park (30 minutes north) and the Surf Coast walking tracks provide extended off-leash and on-leash walking options beyond the city itself.

Off-leash parks, the City of Greater Geelong's off-leash network includes the Eastern Beach off-leash dog area (foreshore south of the rotunda), Sparrovale Reserve (Newcomb, large off-leash grass area), the Barwon River off-leash section at Barwon Heads Road, Balyang Sanctuary off-leash area, and the Lara dog park in the north. Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, the Bellarine Peninsula beaches provide excellent dog access, with Barwon Heads Beach (off-leash sections at designated times), the Barwon River mouth foreshore, and Ocean Grove's dog beach sections offering both ocean and estuary swimming options. The Bellarine Rail Trail provides extended on-leash cycling and walking from Geelong toward Queenscliff through farmland country with good verge walking.

Eastern Beach foreshore, the Geelong waterfront promenade allows dogs on leash and the Eastern Beach rotunda area provides the off-leash section adjacent to the bay swimming enclosure. The foreshore walk from the botanical gardens to Rippleside Park provides 3km of on-leash bay-view walking that is one of Geelong's most pleasant daily exercise routes.

Dog-friendly cafés, Little Malop Street and Pakington Street (Newtown) provide the most dog-friendly café culture in Geelong, with most outdoor seating welcoming dogs. The Waterfront precinct cafés are generally dog-welcoming at external tables.
