Geelong waterfront pop-ups draw steady crowds after winter seating upgrades

Geelong installed 40 heated outdoor dining pods along Eastern Beach on 3 July, a direct response to cooler nights that previously emptied the foreshore after 6pm.

The upgrade matters now because winter visitor numbers to the waterfront dropped 18 per cent last year, prompting the City of Greater Geelong to act before the school holidays. Local traders reported empty tables on weeknights, and the council moved quickly with a $240,000 installation that includes windbreaks and power points for food vans.

Two streets see the biggest shift

Traders on Little Malop Street added extended trading permits last month, allowing cafes such as The Whyte Room and The Sporting Globe to keep outdoor tables open until 10pm. Further along, the weekly Winter Night Market at the Geelong Library Lawn now runs every Thursday through August, with stalls from 15 local growers selling root vegetables and hot soups. Both locations sit within a short walk of the new pods, creating a connected route that was not possible last winter.

Foot traffic counters installed by the council recorded a 32 per cent rise at Eastern Beach between 5pm and 9pm in the first week of the pods compared with the same period in 2025. Average spend per visitor reached $28, according to transaction data shared by participating vendors, with hot drinks and share plates leading sales.

Practical steps for the coming weeks

Residents can check the City of Greater Geelong website for the updated market roster and pod booking system, which opens slots in two-hour blocks. Bring a reusable cup for coffee vendors on Little Malop Street to avoid the 50-cent surcharge, and arrive before 7pm on Thursdays to secure a table at the library lawn stalls before the live music starts at 7:30pm.
