Geelong crime wrap: What police dealt with this week across the Barwon region

A 19-year-old Corio man was charged on Wednesday after Geelong Highway Patrol officers stopped a stolen Holden Colorado on the Princes Freeway near the Corio interchange at around 2.15am. The vehicle, reported stolen from a driveway on Bacchus Marsh Road in Corio two days earlier, was one of seven confirmed stolen vehicles recovered across the Barwon region in the six days to July 3. Police allege the man was also carrying a prohibited weapon. He was remanded to appear at the Geelong Magistrates' Court on July 17.

The theft cluster matters because it lands against a wider pattern Victoria Police have been watching in the northern suburbs since at least February. Norlane, Corio and Lara have accounted for a disproportionate share of the region's property crime figures, and local beat officers have been pushing a targeted presence along the Princes Highway corridor as part of Operation Ribbon, the state-wide vehicle theft crackdown launched by Victoria Police in March 2026. Community meetings in Norlane last month drew more than 60 residents to the Norlane Community Hub on Olympic Avenue, with many raising concerns about opportunistic theft from unlocked cars and garages overnight.

Violence in the CBD and a Surf Coast callout

Downtown, a brawl outside a licensed venue on Malop Street shortly before midnight on Saturday sent two men to University Hospital Geelong on Ryrie Street, one with a suspected broken jaw. Geelong Criminal Investigation Unit detectives are reviewing CCTV footage and are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 11.30pm and 12.15am to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. No arrests have been made. The venue involved has not been named by police while the investigation continues.

On the Surf Coast, the Country Fire Authority's Anglesea brigade responded to a deliberately lit grass fire on the Great Ocean Road near Aireys Inlet on Tuesday afternoon. Crews from Aireys Inlet and Lorne backed up Anglesea within 22 minutes. The fire burned through roughly 1.4 hectares of scrub before wind conditions eased and containment lines held. Victoria Police's arson squad is investigating. Given the proximity to the Angahook-Lorne State Park and ongoing dry conditions, the CFA has flagged that any recurrence in the coming fortnight would escalate the response tier significantly.

Barwon region crime statistics published by the Crime Statistics Agency in May, the most recent full-year dataset available, showed family violence incidents recorded by police rose 6.2 per cent in the 12 months to December 2025, reaching 2,847 recorded incidents across the Geelong local government area. That figure prompted the Barwon Child, Youth and Family alliance to advocate for additional funding in the upcoming state budget for its Geelong Family Violence Hub on Myers Street, which currently has a wait time of up to three weeks for initial case assessment. The state government has not yet confirmed whether that funding request will be met.

Victoria Police are urging Geelong residents to remove valuables from cars overnight, particularly in the Norlane, Corio and Bell Post Hill areas, where patrol frequency has increased under Operation Ribbon. The Barwon Police Service Area has a dedicated Facebook page that pushes real-time safety alerts, and the Geelong Safe City CCTV network, managed by the City of Greater Geelong from its control room on Brougham Street, is being expanded by 14 cameras before September, with installation already underway near the Westfield Geelong on Malop Street and along the waterfront at Cunningham Pier.
