Geelong High School students have begun their season in the Bellarine District athletics program run through School Sport Geelong.
The district setup gives local teenagers a direct route into organised competition without leaving the region. Geelong High sits in the Bellarine group alongside other state secondary schools, while the Barwon district operates on the other side of the city. Winners from each side meet for a Geelong-wide title before any further travel.
Athletics at the school follows separate rules from the team sports. Events are grouped by age from 13 to 20 years, and selection happens inside school hours with help from staff and senior students. The school also fields teams in badminton, basketball, baseball, football, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, table tennis, tennis, soccer and volleyball at Year 7, Year 8, Intermediate and Senior levels.
Swimming and cross country are handled on combined days that bring every Geelong state secondary school together at once, rather than in separate district rounds. All of these activities sit under the School Sport Victoria umbrella that runs the final state championships and selects Victorian teams for national events.
Path to Western Metro and state finals
Any student or team that wins at the Geelong level moves into the Western Metro Division against schools from the wider area. Further success there sends competitors to the School Sport Victoria finals. The structure stays the same each year, so athletes know the next step as soon as results are posted.
