Free community fitness events happening this month
Geelong residents can access no-cost group workouts along the Barwon River and at Eastern Beach throughout July.
How we reported this

Free group fitness sessions open to all ages begin this Saturday at the Geelong Waterfront parkrun and along the Barwon River walking trail.
Local participation in no-cost exercise has risen since early 2026 amid consumer caution over household budgets. Barwon Health data shows a 22 percent increase in community program inquiries from January to June compared with the same period last year. Residents in suburbs such as Newtown and Belmont have cited transport costs and gym fees as barriers, pushing more people toward organised outdoor activities that require no registration fee or equipment.
Weekly sessions at two Geelong sites
The Geelong Waterfront parkrun meets every Saturday at 8am on the path beside Eastern Beach rock pool, with a 5km timed walk or run that starts near the Cunningham Pier entrance. Volunteers mark the course and record results for free. On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9am, Barwon Health runs 45-minute strength and mobility circuits on the grass beside the Barwon River walking trail at the Moorabool Street footbridge. Both programs accept drop-ins and supply printed route maps at the meeting points.
Parental groups from Geelong East Primary School have used the Tuesday circuit for the past three months, with an average of 35 adults and children turning up each week. The Eastern Beach rock pool area recorded 178 finishers at the most recent parkrun on 4 July. No bookings are needed and sessions continue through the end of July regardless of weather.
Check the Barwon Health website or the noticeboard at the Eastern Beach kiosk for any last-minute changes before heading out. Arrive 10 minutes early to join the briefing and meet other participants.
