Local fun runs, charity walks and fitness events coming up

A 5km charity walk along the Barwon River walking trail is set for 15 July, with registration opening this week through Barwon Health services.

Winter months often see lower turnout for outdoor activity in Geelong, yet organisers report steady interest in events that pair movement with community causes and keep participants accountable through group starts.

The route begins at the Geelong Waterfront near Eastern Beach rock pool and follows the trail upstream for two kilometres before looping back, with volunteers stationed at the 1km and 3km marks to direct traffic and offer water. Another event, the Geelong Waterfront parkrun, continues every Saturday morning at 8am with a 5km timed course that starts near the bollards on the eastern end of the waterfront promenade.

Entry for the 15 July walk costs $25 for adults and $15 for children under 16, with all proceeds directed to Barwon Health rehabilitation programs. Last year the same event drew 320 participants and raised $18,400, according to the foundation’s annual report released in May.

July schedule highlights

A fun run organised by local running clubs takes place on 22 July starting at 9am from the Eastern Beach rock pool car park, covering 3km and 7km options along the shoreline path. Participants can collect bibs from the temporary desk set up at the Geelong Yacht Club from 7.30am that morning.

Those new to group exercise can join the free introductory session at the Barwon River walking trail trailhead on 10 July at 7pm, where volunteers explain pacing and safety before a short 2km group stroll.

How to take part

Residents can sign up online through the Barwon Health website or in person at the Barwon Health community centre on Ryrie Street before each event. Walkers and runners are advised to arrive 30 minutes early and wear visible clothing for the winter dusk starts.
