Geelong fitness challenges draw hundreds, strengthen community bonds
From the Barwon River to Eastern Beach, group exercise events are drawing hundreds of locals into shared goals and stronger social ties.
How we reported this

More than 450 people lined up at the Geelong Waterfront parkrun on the first Saturday of July, according to organisers, a new record for the winter season. The free 5 km event, now in its eighth year, is one of the fastest-growing community fitness challenges in the region, with participation up 22 per cent compared to the same period in 2025.
The surge comes as Geelong residents seek low-cost, social ways to stay active amid rising living costs. Group fitness challenges, from timed runs along the Barwon River walking trail to paddle-board relays at Eastern Beach rock pool, are filling a gap left by expensive gym memberships and boutique studio classes. Barwon Health’s community health team notes that group exercise participation in the city has climbed steadily since 2023, with more than 1,200 locals now enrolled in free or low-cost challenge programs across the municipality.
From the river to the rock pool
The Geelong Waterfront parkrun is the most visible example. Every Saturday at 7:45 a.m., runners and walkers gather at the start line near the Eastern Beach kiosk, traversing the 2.5 km out-and-back course along the Barwon River’s southern bank. The event is entirely volunteer-run, with a rotating roster of 30 to 40 locals each week handling timing, marshalling and tail-walking duties. For many, the post-run coffee at the nearby Bellarine Coffee Co. is as important as the finish time.
But parkrun isn’t the only game in town. The Geelong Adventure Runners club, based out of the Steampacket Hotel on Eastern Beach Road, hosts a “Challenge the Geelong” series each month from March to November. The series includes a 10 km trail run through the You Yangs Regional Park (entry fee $15) and a 6 km urban obstacle course that winds through the pedestrian malls of central Geelong. Last month’s event drew 87 participants, with the youngest aged 8 and the oldest 72.
At Eastern Beach, the Geelong Swim Club runs a “Winter Warrior” challenge throughout July and August. Participants complete a 500 m swim in the heated rock pool every Sunday morning, with a collective goal to log 500 km by the end of winter. As of July 10, the group had swum 312 km, a pace that, if maintained, will see them hit the target by August 24. The club charges a one-off $20 registration fee, covering pool access and a finisher’s cap.
The data behind the trend
The numbers back up what’s happening on the ground. According to Geelong Council’s active living survey, released in May 2026, 34 per cent of Geelong adults now participate in a regular group fitness event, up from 27 per cent in 2023. The same survey found that 62 per cent of participants cited “sense of community” as the primary reason for joining, ahead of health benefits (58 per cent) and cost (45 per cent).
Barwon Health’s Active Geelong program, which promotes group exercise for people over 50, reports a 40 per cent increase in attendance at its weekly “Walk & Talk” sessions along the Barwon River walking trail between the Johnstone Park rotunda and the Breakwater. The program, which started in 2022 with 15 regulars, now has a core group of 68 participants. Sessions are free, and the only requirement is a pair of comfortable shoes.
“We’re seeing people who’ve never exercised in their lives show up because a neighbour invited them,” said program co-ordinator Susan Tran in a recent council newsletter. “The fitness is secondary, it’s about showing up for each other.”
What’s next: The Geelong Waterfront parkrun will host a special “Community Pledge” event on August 1, where participants can commit to completing six consecutive runs. The Geelong Adventure Runners’ next challenge, a 16 km night run along the Barwon River, is scheduled for September 19, with registration opening on August 1 at $25 per person. For those looking to start, Barwon Health’s Active Geelong program runs a free six-week beginners’ group at the Geelong Botanic Gardens every Tuesday at 9 a.m., starting July 21. As with any exercise program, consult your GP before beginning a new fitness routine.
