Trains to Melbourne

V/Line operates frequent train services between Geelong and Melbourne's Southern Cross Station. The journey takes approximately 1 hour on express services. Trains run regularly throughout the day, making Geelong a popular location for Melbourne commuters. Services also extend south to Waurn Ponds and north via the Geelong Ring Road corridor.

Regional trains continue from Geelong to Warrnambool and beyond on the Warrnambool line.

Local Buses

CDC Geelong (formerly McHarry's) operates the city bus network under the Geelong network branding. Routes connect the Geelong CBD, train station, Waterfront, Highton, Waurn Ponds, Lara, Corio, Norlane, and Newcomb. The myki card works across all metropolitan Geelong buses and V/Line trains.

Getting Around by Car

The Princes Freeway (M1) connects Geelong to Melbourne in about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic. The Geelong Ring Road allows traffic to bypass the CBD when heading south toward the Surf Coast or Bellarine Peninsula.

Parking in central Geelong includes metered street parking and multi-storey car parks. Many residential and commercial areas offer free parking.

To the Surf Coast

A car is generally the most practical option for reaching Torquay, Anglesea, Lorne, and other Surf Coast towns from Geelong. Some bus services (Route 51) connect Geelong to Torquay.

Cycling

Geelong has extensive shared paths, particularly along the Geelong Waterfront and around the bay. The Bellarine Rail Trail provides a 35 km off-road cycling route to Queenscliff. Bikes can be taken on V/Line trains outside peak hours.
