Hiking and Walking Near Geelong: Bellarine, Surf Coast and the You Yangs
Geelong's geography between Port Phillip Bay and the Surf Coast gives it access to diverse walking terrain within 30-60 minutes. The You Yangs Regional Park north of Geelong has granite inselbergs with walking tracks to Flinders Peak (352 metres) and Big Rock, rewarding short climbs with views across the Geelong plain and Port Phillip Bay. The Surf Coast Walk runs approximately 44 kilometres from Torquay south toward Airey's Inlet, with sections accessible as day walks from Torquay and Jan Juc. The Barwon River Trail running through the southern city provides flat, accessible riverside walking through significant vegetation corridors. Breamlea Flora and Fauna Reserve near Connewarre has accessible wetland walking. The Bellarine Peninsula's Point Lonsdale Bluff area has coastal walking with views across the Port Phillip Heads. The Brisbane Ranges National Park, 30 minutes north, has granite outcrop and box ironbark woodland walking tracks rewarding in wildflower season (August-October). The Otway Fly Treetop Walk at Beech Forest is an outstanding elevated rainforest experience 90 minutes from Geelong.
